Marine surveyors are people who inspect or examine marine vessels to assess and make reports on their condition. This is done to make sure they meet certain standards or specifications. Main Duties

• The vessels and watercraft that marine surveyors typically inspect include boats, dredges, ships and tankers. They check components or features such as tailshafts, propellers, rudders, sea valves, hatchways, ventilators and cargo space to determine safe operating standards, the safety of people riding in the vessel, and repairs necessary to meet insurance requirements. After inspection is concluded, they draw up a report on their findings--including recommended actions and repairs--for submission to the client.

Marine Surveyor vs. Hydrographic Surveyor

• Marine surveyor is sometimes confused with hydrographic surveyor. For instance, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists "hydrographic surveyor" as an alternate term for "marine surveyor." However, hydrographic surveyors differ from marine surveyors as they focus on the features of bodies of water and their surroundings to determine how they affect the vessels that marine surveyors inspect.

Workplace

• Many marine surveyors have their own businesses, preferring to provide their services to a multitude of clients to ensure that they hold unbiased views in their work, as well as enjoy professional independence. Others are salaried employees of marine insurers and their clients, thus making them important arbitrators in damage claims.

Training

• Marine surveyors usually enter the field through apprenticeships, or they earn a diploma in marine surveying from a technical school, community college or professional association. As of July 2010, there are no licensing requirements for marine surveyors. However, professional associations such as the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors offer credentialing to enforce certain standards to be expected of such workers.
