What Is the Salary of a Marine Surveyor?

Marine surveyors may also analyze marine constructions and vessels.

Detailed geographical surveying is an essential component for the functioning of many industries. While some surveyors work on land, marine surveyors use manual and electronic surveying implements to map the topography of coastlines, rivers, estuaries, lakes and the ocean floor. Salary levels for the role are likely to be affected by elements such as geographical location and employer type.

Average Salary

  • For the purposes of its May 2010 survey of employment throughout the United States, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics classified marine surveyors along with their terrestrial counterparts. It concluded that the mean annual wage across the category was $58,140. Calculated from wage information collected from over 43,000 individual practitioners, this equates to an hourly rate of $27.95, and a monthly rate of $4,845. At the time of writing, wage comparison website Indeed.com listed the average yearly pay in marine surveying specifically as $69,000, higher than surveyors overall.

Salary by Industry

  • Like other surveyors, most marine practitioners work in architectural, engineering and related services. According to the bureau's statistics, the mean annual wage within this sector was $56,700. Surveyors working as management, scientific or technical consultants earned a mean salary of $64,870. In the public sector, surveyors working for the federal executive branch achieved a mean yearly salary of $82,230, while those in state governments earned $72,270, and those working at local government level received $62,370.

Salary by Location

  • The bureau also detailed how wage levels for surveyors such as marine surveyors were influenced by the state in which an individual worked. California and Alaska were given as the most lucrative locations, with mean annual wages of $79,460 and $73,270, respectively. Pay rates were similar between Nevada and Washington, at $71,730 and $70,930, respectively, while, in contrast, North Dakota had a mean of $47,220 and Vermont had $45,410.

Prospects

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment across the surveying, cartography and mapping industries will increase by around 19 percent over the period from 2008 to 2018, a faster growth rate than that expected for the entire nation, estimated at between 7 and 13 percent over the same time-frame. An increase in private and public bodies, such as urban planners, seeking detailed geographic information to help conduct their business will be the primary driver for this growth. It should mean that salary levels across the industry, including for marine surveyors, will remain very competitive.
