The Inspection of cargo gear is requiring an annual inspection for cranes, derricks and other lifting appliances. The tendency is for the inspection to be done by classification societies, but this not universal. Ship repair yards often do the job, sometimes the ship's crew, sometimes even the owner's superintendent. Some societies have now published voluntary rules on cargo gear.
The main difference between cranes and derricks is
that the cranes cannot be taken apart every four year and they have thorough inspection annually.
Derricks,
1. the annual inspection should consist of a thorough visual check of structure and gear.
2. look at wire
3. look at each block
4. check shackles, chain, rings and hook
5. test wight, swing and load.
