What Does a Marine Surveyor Do?

Marine surveyors are necessary to ensure the safety of water crafts and marine vessels. You may find a marine surveyor on tankers, boats, ships and dredges. Marine surveyors have several important responsibilities.

Insurance Requirements

• Marine surveyors must decide whether or not the water craft requires repairs in order for the boat to be legitimately insured. This is done by taking tailshaft readings. Also, the hull's underwater section is examined while the boat is out of the water in order to properly evaluate conditions.

Meeting Standards

• Standard operations requirements of the vessel are evaluated. This is to ensure the safety of all passengers and the crew. Many aspects of the ship are examined, such as the propellers, sea valves and rudders. Items on the ship that are above water are also looked at, such as the ventilator and hatchways.

Creating Conclusions

• If a marine vessel meets the standards of the marine surveyor, the marine surveyor will then issue a certificate to the client. The marine surveyor will also write up any necessary repairs or advice. These reports are then given to the marine surveyor's client.
